The bathroom that most people see...

Let's start with one of the smallest rooms in your house, meaning the number of changes is limited to a select few items, but the change can be dramatic!  First, take a look at the vanity, and consider the space saving pedestal sink because storage isn't really a priority in the powder room. You don't need to look at endless cabinets and countertops because the cabinet and countertop are already married in an array of units available.  Be sure the stool is harmonious with the new vanity, and that hardware and fixtures follow one theme.  Be adventurous with the wall color, and pair it with an area rug featuring a color scheme that ties the elements of the floor covering, walls and art together.

Don't be deceived by the humble word "farm" when you start pricing a kitchen remodel!  Shop carefully for the popular farm sink with the apron front!  This little beauty is over $1300.00, but other models run as low as $500.00.  Be sure to coordinate the hardware with dark or burnished tones, rather than high gloss.   Cabinetry is available in "old" reclaimed wood finishes for a bit of authenticity.  For a knock your socks off look, add a brick fireplace that burns wood!

Concerned about looking too modern?

You may need professional help making this a hit, not a miss, but contemporary definitely does not have to be all about expanses of glass and shiny surfaces.  This is not the old standby brass bed, but its clean lines do not restrict you to sparce furnishings with little color or pattern.  Yes, it might not look at home with your newlywed "bedroom suite" as it was called, but with the right mix of traditional furniture with clean lines and strong shapes, and a contemporary Eames chair and ottoman, this bedroom can be spectacular yet comfortable!
